Re-use and re-purpose - Jeans

Now that we have closed here is an archived post from the Ampthill Country Market stall blog...

One of our producers is turning old jeans into bags, lots of different sizes and shapes.

If the jeans have zipped pockets or other fasteners this will mean that they will have an extra pocket.  So maybe you have some jeans destined for the bin drop them off at the stall.
If they are of no use they will be added to a charity bag, charity shop or the recycling.

Holes on the knees are perfectly usable.

Above are the latest acquisitions that are destined to be bags in the near future.

So the jeans are laundered and then stared at for a few days :) to try and decide how to make them into pretty bags!  The fabric to line and make the strap is chosen from a large stash of fabric that seems to be ever growing after a visit to the shops....and also a large drawer of haberdashery...oh dear :)

Once cut up into pieces they are accessorised with lace and other trimmings.  The linings are made from a pretty contrasting fabric and have a slip pocket added, and maybe a button pocket, really as the fancy strikes.  Normally a handmade fabric flower added using the same or contrasting fabric as the lining, big button and a strap made that loops around or buttons through and adds to the 'decoration'.  Button holes are great fun on the new machine.

The challenge is to get the right size bag, with enough pockets, It can often mean piecing together denim to make it wider, but it all adds to the charm.

You can be assured that any sales will mean that more fabric can be purchased.....fabric obsession confession

So as you can see they are all made with loving care, and take quite a while...

And here are a few that have been on the stall in recent months:

Re-use & Re-purpose - Mini cloches

Now that we have closed here is an archived post from the Ampthill Country Market stall blog...

Did you want to plant out a few vegetable plants in the garden and it is a bit early as the nights are a little cold, you can put a cloche over the top and they should be fine from April onwards - you may even be OK in March too.

We have lettuce plants for sale at the moment on Ampthill Country Market, you can put them in your garden with a little hat on now, and they will be fine.  I would suggest that you make sure they don;t get too hot during the day.  Leave the lids off as that will give them some air.

There are other plastic containers that will do the job just fine, just see what you are throwing away, just cut a hole for air circulation...and it didn't cost you a penny.

Just search for plastic bottle cloche - here is a little more reading

Cutting table

I have been looking for a small sturdy table that i can add my cutting mat to, and this was just the right size from The Range.  I think you can get them from other places, but I wanted to see it before I committed to buy.

It works just right and when I am done I fold it away.  The legs are a bit of a faff, as you have to remove them. but not much of a problem really.

Clearly no good if you want to cut out big patterns - but for my 'crafting' type of sewing it is perfect.

Carrier bag holders

Just for fun I made a couple of these using the legs from some jeans that looked like they had hardly been worn.

Left them at Hexton Country Matters
Bottom is elasticated, top just has a couple of tucks.

Mirrors

I thought it would be nice to make a few items that could be bought a 'sets', so made some little pouches and bought these little mirrors to pop into them.

I played with a pyramid pouch as well with matching tissue.

Ampthill Country Market Stall

It is with sadness that we have decided to close Ampthill Country Market stall - so we just have 2 more weeks.  We were running out of members, and really too much for the small number of us left to cope with, we have always shared the load with baking and making, as well as stall set up and take down.

I thought I would share some of the pictures of my things that have been on the market in the last year or two previously posted on the market facebook page.

The days out that were on the blog have now been added to a new blog as it seemed a shame to lose them.

I will also post some of my other favourite posts that I made on the Country Market here over the next few weeks.

I always have a few things at Hexton Country Matters they also have a facebook page.

Bucket bag

had a play and made this, no idea what to do with it....

Simple to make, but might be better 'quilted' that will be a new thing for me to do...

Been looking around and notice there are a few with quilted linings, so think that will be my next try.

Handbags

I saw these pieces of fabric and just loved the design, there were 6 pieces, 4 of them are embroidered.  I assume they were out of a curtain sample book, as they were similar designs in different colour way.

So I ploughed on and made them all into similar bags, with a the same stripy canvas type of fabric on the back.  Also used the striped canvas for the front pockets.

The plainer fabric sports a zipped pocket on the outside...those lacy zips again, and I left the top unstitched, so a pocket there too.

They all have pockets inside, and also slip pockets.

I had it in my mind that they would be simple totes/shoppers, but realised that the pieces were just a bit too small.  So I added wadding to make the bags more 'substantial' and also some interfacing and a magnetic closure, so now are large handbags.

I enjoyed the challenge, I like to try and make some different things.

Lace Zips

The lace zips were back out again and I made a couple of  'cosmetic bags' or anything else you want to put in them!  These are lined and I spent ages wandering around the internet looking for ideas to not have raw edges, I added a few onto my pinterest. I did like the idea of folding in the edges and then covering with fabric/binding, I found the other way of not sewing to the edge a bit fiddly, filled a Sunday afternoon!
I just don't like to have raw edges even if they are zig zagged.

Fabric from Florida

I didn't post the fabric I bought last summer in Florida, i did also manage to find some in Fabricland on my visit to Canada last September too.

Walmart, Joanns, HobbyLobby and even TuesdayMorning managed to have things that I 'needed'.

Show and tell time

So a long time since I have posted on here, but I have been making, maybe not so much in the last few weeks. I will start with a few old makes,  here is a mini cross body bag that I take when I go walking with my friend Wendy.

We often stop back in town to buy a paper or such like, and takes my keys, phone and tissues nice and light.

I then bought some lace zips that were just in random colours and I couldn't decide what to do with the initially and then realised that a couple of little bags to same would be perfect.

I left them at Hexton Country Matters for sale.

I forgot I had the cord fabric, so made a slightly bigger pocket with a snap fastener

The idea was originally from a youtube video by Smarmy
